Anti-stress Committee of Government College of Commerce and Business Administration, Sector-50, Chandigarh organized a talk on Stress Management on 3rd August 2019 in the college auditorium. The theme of the lecture was “Stress and Management”. It was chaired by Dr. Manjit Kaur, Principal, GCCBA. She introduced and welcomed the esteemed speaker, Swami Atmajnananda, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Sector -15, Chandigarh.

Swami ji initiated the topic with powerful mantra for deep inner peace and harmony of the society. He delved into the reasons and types of “Stress” and started his lecture about the cause of stress. He informed the audience that “Stress is body’s natural defense against predators and danger. It flushes the body with hormones to prepare systems to evade or confront danger.” This is known as the “fight-or-flight” mechanism. Swami ji highlighted “that stress symptoms can be both physical and psychological; short-term stress can be helpful, but long-term stress is linked to various health conditions.”

 He further explained that we can prepare ourselves for stress by learning some self-management tips. Swami ji elucidated that during stress blood pressure and pulse rate rise, breathing is faster, the digestive system slows down, immune activity decreases, the muscles become tense and a heightened state of alertness prevents sleep. Swami ji also focused on stress management techniques. He detailed how stress management can help remove or change the source of stress; alter the way you view a stressful event; lower the impact that stress might have on your body and learn alternative ways of coping.

Along with the faculty members, nearly 300 students from various classes participated in the talk and discussed their opinion regarding the stress management with Swami ji. Swami ji emphasized that for de-stressing us, prayer alone would not suffice, but selfless actions and control of mind together would help attain bliss. He concluded by bringing out the ideas of self-determination, focus and control of mind as the essence of happiness which drives away stress forever.
